Launch of the blog “Brexit, Europe, and the Left”

RLS Brussels presents project to contribute to building a peoples’ Europe

Brussels, 18 March 2019. Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung Brussels launches a new blog with a high-profile panel discussing “Brexit, Europe and the Left”. The blog offers a leftwing and trans-European perspective on Brexit. It provides a forum for activists, political actors, and authors, to develop an effective left strategy for building a people’s Europe.

“Brexit is an expression of the crisis of the European political project. That’s why, apart from the many practical problems it presents, there are also some tricky questions we need to confront”, Andreas Thomsen, head of RLS Brussels office, points out: “Crucially, what does Brexit mean for the European left? What is the European left’s position on the EU? Can we even speak of a ‘European left’?” In light of such fundamental issues, broad and constructive dialogue is paramount. With the Brexit blog, RLS Brussels wants to give an impetus for change in the debate and strengthen the links among leftists and progressives in the UK and the broader Europe. Whatever happens on 29 March.

Tonight’s panel discussion will set off the debate by reflecting on some of these issues. Speakers on the panel are Helmut Scholz, MEP (GUE/NGL), Owen Jones (Guardian Columnist, Author and Activist), Elena Crasta (European Officer, TUC Brussels Office) and Brian Carty (Special Advisor on Brexit, GUE/NGL). The discussion will be hosted by Dr Luke Cooper and Alena Ivanova (Another Europe is Possible), and will be broadcast as part of the Another Europe podcast for the Brexit blog: www.brexitblog-rosalux.de
