Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung
The Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung (RLS) emerged from the association “Gesellschaftsanalyse und politische Bildung e. V.” (Social Analysis and Political Education), founded in 1990. The RLS is recognized as a political foundation by the party Die Linke (The Left) and is committed to democratic socialism. Like other party-affiliated foundations in Germany, it is financed from public funds.
The central task of the RLS is to develop left-wing strategies, socialist perspectives, and analyses in the fight against right-wing extremism, for climate justice and socio-ecological transformation, in trade union and social struggles, as well as in peace policy. It sees itself as a place for critical thinking, political education, and programmatic debates on socio-political alternatives. To this end, it conveys knowledge about social, economic, and political contexts and promotes international exchange between left-wing parties, social movements, trade unions, and critical intellectuals. Another focus is promoting young academics through study and doctoral scholarships.
The RLS’s German and global work is carried by a large number of full-time and volunteer contributors: academics, authors, trusted lecturers, scholarship holders, and numerous volunteers on advisory boards, discussion groups, and selection committees. The foundation employs over 200 staff members in its departments as well as in political communication and administration. In addition, there are more than 20 international offices as well as regional offices active in over 80 countries.
The RLS office in Brussels works on the institutions of the European Union (EU), questions of left-wing politics in Europe, and the EU’s relationship with countries of the Global South. It is also responsible for Scandinavia, the Benelux countries, France, Italy, and Austria. Its goal is to develop democratic-socialist responses to the social, ecological, economic, and democratic contradictions of the EU. As part of the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung ‘s international network, the Brussels office contributes to the networking of left-wing forces and the development of joint political strategies in Europe.
