Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung (Brussels Office) is pleased to invite you to the event “The continued militarisation of EU’s borders: Expansion of Frontex’s executive power”, taking place on Thursday 1st of October, from 15:00 to 18:30h.
Co-organised with The Left in the European Parliament, this conference will examine the growing role of security, surveillance and military technologies in the management of Europe’s borders, both within and beyond the European Union.
The discussion will look at the continued militarisation of EU border policies, including the growing involvement of private security, surveillance and technology companies, as well as the expansion of Frontex’s executive powers. It will also consider the consequences of these developments for people on the move, and the challenges they pose to fundamental rights, democratic accountability and legal oversight.
Bringing together researchers, civil society organisations, lawyers, journalists and activists working on border policies and fundamental rights, the event will provide a space to examine the realities and consequences of Europe’s increasingly securitised border infrastructure. Particular attention will be given to mechanisms for transparency, accountability and legal redress, as well as to the experiences of those challenging abuses at Europe’s borders.
The conference will also create an opportunity for different actors to exchange experiences, strengthen cooperation and explore avenues for further litigation, advocacy and other initiatives aimed at ensuring respect for fundamental rights and accountability in EU border policies.
We look forward to welcoming you to this important discussion.
